The Liberal Democrats and their Tory chums have slashed Central funding for fire authorities by 25 per cent over four years, with the heaviest cuts expected in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Merseyside Fire Authority has had to cut over £7 million from this year’s budget. Because the cut in the Tory / Lib Dem government grant is ‘back loaded’ there will be worse and bigger cuts into years 3 and 4.
A survey published today in the Independent Newspaper forecasts that on Merseyside 170 posts will go, including 92 firefighters.
Councillor Les Byrom MBE FRCIS. Candidate for Victoria ward says “Merseyside has been the safest place in England to live from a fire safety point of view, fire deaths and fire incidents have fallen dramatically since the Merseyside authority started its massive push on community fire safety including fitting free smoke detectors and home fire safety checks. This has now been accepted as a model of operation within the UK and the world. I hope we can maintain our position as one of the safest areas to live, this will be difficult given the coalition governments cuts but we will do our best to put public safety first”
