Sefton Central Labour Party is stepping in to save Crosby Music Festival.

The popular annual event, which this year will mark its 15th anniversary, was due to be axed after Sefton Council withdrew its funding. But Sefton Unison and Sefton Central Labour Party have come together to provide funding to save the festival.

In the past, Crosby Music Festival has attracted big names including Cast frontman John Power, The Christians and The Real Thing.

Crosby campaigner and Labour’s candidate for Blundellsands Ward, Ben Winstanley, said: “Crosby Music Festival is one of the biggest events in the local calendar, that’s why we couldn’t let it be a victim of the Lib Dem Tory cuts.

“When you think that 30,000 people flock to the Village for the event each year. That’s 30,000 customers to the local businesses. It would have been devastating for the local economy if the event didn’t happen.

“That’s why we were more than happy to join Unison in saving the event.”

Ben said the festival was an ideal opportunity to send a clear message that there is real opposition to the LibDem, Tory cuts.

Ben said: “Crosby Music Festival was to be just one of the victims of the LibDem, Tory cuts. We all already know the many others. We all know someone who is losing or has lost their job. We all have been affected because of the cuts to vital services, particularly for the most vulnerable in our communities.

“By saving the festival but also renaming it ‘The Crosby Music Festival – Against the Cuts’, we are sending a direct message that there is strong opposition to these Liberal Democrat, Tory cuts.

“And it also gives us the chance to come together as a community and listen to some top name musicians and hear some of the very talented local artistes too.”

Providing the Libdem or Tories don’t try and spoil it again, Crosby Music Festival will be held Friday, April 29 up to and including Monday, May 2.
